WHO Chief Tedros Shares Harrowing Experience of Surviving Israeli Airstrike at Yemen’s Sana’a Airport. The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has shared his harrowing experience of surviving an Israeli airstrike at Yemen’s main airport. He revealed that during the incident, he was uncertain whether he would survive. Tedros made these remarks yesterday, Friday.
On Thursday, Israel launched an airstrike at Sana’a International Airport in Yemen’s capital. At that time, Tedros was present at the airport. He described the explosions as so loud that the sound continued to ring in his ears even a day later.
Tedros Adhanom stated that it became quickly evident that the airport had been attacked. After around four explosions, people started running frantically for safety.
He mentioned that during the incident, he was waiting near the designated passenger area at the airport. One of the four explosions occurred very close to him.
Speaking to Reuters, the WHO chief said, “I wasn’t sure whether I would survive or not because the incident happened very close. It occurred just a few meters away from where we were. A slight deviation in direction, and it could have directly hit us.”
Tedros noted that after the attack, he and his colleagues were stranded at the airport for about an hour. During that time, drones were hovering overhead, and they feared another attack might occur. He added that amidst the rubble, he and his colleagues saw fragments of missiles.
He emphasized that there was no place at the airport where they could take shelter to escape the attack.
The Israeli airstrike on Sana’a came after Yemen’s Houthi rebels launched drone and missile attacks on Israel. The Houthis claimed that their attacks on Israel were carried out in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
According to the Houthi-controlled news agency Saba, the airstrike on Sana’a airport killed three people, while another attack in Hodeidah killed three more. These attacks also left 40 others injured.
